Description

Method of manufacturing a smart card comprising a micro-circuit with writable memory
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a smart card comprising a micro-circuit having at least one writable memory.

At present, to manufacture a smart card fitted with a microcircuit, a management program is first carried out containing all the instructions necessary to manage the operation of the micro-circuit, then the management program is implemented in the micro-circuit by a foundry operation, then the micro-circuit is fixed on a card body, and the card is personalized by recording, for example, the data making it possible to identify the latter as well as its future holder.

However, such a manufacturing process is not entirely satisfactory.

Indeed, when the management program contains so-called "bugs" errors or when it is desired to make improvements to it, a new foundry operation must necessarily be carried out in order to implant the corrected or improved program in other microcircuits.

Foundry operations, which are carried out by few specialists, have the disadvantage of being very expensive and time consuming.

The present invention more particularly proposes to remedy this drawback and, to do this, it relates to a method of manufacturing a smart card comprising a micro-circuit having at least one writable memory, which is characterized in that it consists in carrying out a loading program containing the minimum of instructions able to make the micro-circuit intelligent later on, in implanting the loading program in the micro-circuit by a foundry operation, in fixing the micro on a card body -programmed circuit, to carry out a management program containing instructions able to manage the operation of the micro-circuit, to load the management program into the writable memory of the micro-circuit, to disconnect the loading program in order to operate the microcircuit on its management program, and to personalize the card.

Thanks to this process, it is no longer necessary to use the services of a founder to implement management programs in the micro-circuits to which modifications have been made to correct bugs, or to obtain greater performance. The industrialist who fixed the micro-circuits in which the loading program was installed on card bodies only has to make electrical connections to load the corrected program into the writable memory of these micro-circuits or perfected.

It is thus easily understood that the cost price of the smart cards obtained by the implementation of the method according to the invention can be significantly lower than that of the smart cards currently manufactured.

The differences between the process currently used and the process according to the invention will become clear from the appended drawings in which
- Figure 1 is a diagram illustrating an embodiment of the method currently used; and
- Figure 2 is a diagram illustrating an embodiment of the method according to the invention.

Referring first to FIG. 1, it can be seen that the current method comprises a step consisting in carrying out the management program containing all the instructions necessary for managing the operation of the microcircuits of the memory cards, a step consisting in sending the management program at a specialized smelter so that the latter inscribes it in the silicon of the micro-circuits by masking a ROM memory of the latter, a step consisting in recovering the programmed micro-circuits and fixing (or inserting) the micro -circuits programmed on card bodies, and a step consisting in personalizing the cards.

When we have corrected bugs detected in the management program or made improvements to it, we are forced to send the modified program to the founder so that the latter inscribes it in the silicon of a new series of micro-circuits, which is long and expensive.

Referring now to FIG. 2, it can be seen that the method according to the invention comprises a step consisting in carrying out a loading program containing the minimum of instructions capable of rendering the microcircuits intelligent, a step consisting to send the loading program to a specialized smelter so that the latter inscribes it in the silicon of the micro-circuits by masking the ROM memory of the latter, a step consisting in recovering the micro-circuits thus programmed and in fixing the micro circuits programmed on card bodies, a step consisting in carrying out the management program containing the instructions making it possible to manage the operation of the micro-circuits, a step consisting in loading this program into a writable EPROM or EEPROM memory of the micro-circuits, a step consisting in disconnecting the loading program so as to allow the operation of the micro-circuits on the ur management program, and a step of personalizing the cards.

When we have corrected bugs in the management program or made improvements to it, it is no longer necessary to have recourse to a founder, the modified management program being able to be loaded in the micro-circuits, immediately after inserting.

It is therefore easily understood that the method according to the invention is less expensive than the current method and that it allows appreciable time savings.
