Abstract

Monomers and unsaturated polyesters are cold cured by exposure to long wavelength (380-400 nm) UV radiation, including sunlight and daylight, by adding 0.5-2% of a sulphamide cpd (I) to the conventional reactants. (I) is pref 2,3-dihydro-3-oxobenzisosulphonazole. USE/ADVANTAGE - Incorporation of (I) into conventional photocurable unsaturated polyester and monomer compsns allows the compsn to be cold cured using long wavelength UV in place of the UV emitted from Hg vapour lamps with a wavelength of 300 nm and less. The use of (I) reduces danger to operatives, allows curing of the system without evolution of monomer vapours, and reduces environmental pollution.

Description

The present; invention consists in the use of certain molecules to reinforce, in the polymerization of monomers and polyesters unsaturated by radiation, in particular Ultra
Violet, the action towards long wavelengths, components already known and used.

In fact, traditional polymerization by this means can only be carried out with mercury vapor emitters which emit radiation of 300 Nm and less, which is very dangerous.

The applicant has been able to demonstrate that the addition in small proportions, on average 0.5 to 2% relative to the material to be polymerized, of-SULFIMIDES and more particularly of 2-3 DIHYDRO-3-OXOBENZISOSULFONAZOLE, this in addition to the usual reagents, allowed polymerization with a satisfactory yield under the action of radiation up to the lengths of 380 - 400 Nm, that is to say until visible, sun and daylight.

As advantages of the system, it should be noted: absence of danger for humans absence of release of monomer vapors removal of mixtures of reagents before use, and absence of problems for the environment.
