Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to evaporators constituted by a cylindrical casing, of circular section and with vertical axis, which comprises, in its lower part, a bundle of vertical tubes whose ends are fixed, in a sealed manner in holes of two horizontal plates of which the edge is tightly fixed to the envelope to form a first chamber provided with a steam inlet and the upper part of which constitutes a second chamber where the steam produced is collected and which is provided with an outlet, the bottom of the envelope and the lower plate of the bundle forming an inlet and distribution chamber for the liquid to be concentrated.
In evaporators of this type, the liquid to be concentrated is admitted into the tubes by their lower end and circulates from bottom to top in the latter as a result of the boiling which takes place there, thanks to the heat given off by the vapor admitted into the first chamber and condensing on the outside surface of the tubes. Arrived at the upper end of the tubes, the liquid emulsified by the bubbles of vapor produced overflows on the upper plate while the vapor is released and is collected in the second chamber. To reduce the hydrostatic pressure in the tubes and, by Consequently, the pressure and the temperature of the heating vapor, attempts have been made, in known devices, to reduce as much as possible the height of the liquid above the upper plate of the bundle of tubes by discharging it towards a central well or an annular collector whose edge is flush with the upper face of the plate.
The arrangement of a central well inside the beam requires increasing the diameter of the beam and, consequently. of the envelope to keep the same heat exchange surface which leads to increasing the cost of the device.
In devices with known annular collector, the upper part of the casing has a diameter significantly greater than that of the lower part and its base surrounds the top of the latter to delimit the collector, the bottom of which consists of a ring welded to two parts of the envelope. This solution is as expensive as the previous one. Furthermore, the necessities of manufacture make it necessary to give the collector a relatively large volume, from which results an increase in the retention time of the liquid in the evaporator which may have drawbacks for certain applications, in particular in sugar refinery, an increase in the coloring of sugary juices harmful for the manufacture of sugar.
The object of the present invention is to preserve the advantages of devices with an annular collector without having to increase the diameter of the envelope beyond the minimum value corresponding to the diameter of the bundle of tubes and to allow the volume of the collector to be reduced. the minimum value necessary for the proper functioning of the level control systems with which these evaporators are fitted.
The evaporator which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that the annular collector is outside the casing and communicates with the interior space of the casing situated just above the upper plate of the bundle of tubes by pierced openings in the envelope and possibly by channels connecting the collector to said openings. The collector may be constituted by a ring with a section in
U, open towards the inside and the edges of which will be fixed, for example by welding, on the envelope. It may also be constituted by a tubular ring connected to the envelope by a plurality of tubes. Preferably, the bottom of the collector will be located below the plane of the upper face of the upper plate of the tube bundle and, if necessary, the tubes will be inclined downward, from the envelope towards the collector.
The following description refers to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of non-limiting example, two embodiments of the invention and in which
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an evaporator according to the invention; and
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing another embodiment.
The evaporators shown in the drawings consist of a cylindrical casing 10, of circular section and with a vertical axis, closed at its two ends by bottoms 12 and 14. A bundle of vertical tubes 16 is placed inside the casing , in its lower part; only one of these tubes has been shown in the drawings to make them clearer. The ends of these tubes are fixed, in a sealed manner, in holes drilled in two horizontal plates 18 and 20, the edge of which is fixed in sealed manner to the envelope so as to form, with the latter, a chamber 22 in which heating steam is admitted through an inlet 24.
The upper part of the envelope forms a chamber 26, called a calender, in which the vapor produced is collected. This chamber contains, in its upper part, a separator 28 where the vapor is rid of the droplets which it has entrained, before being evacuated by an outlet 30.
The liquid to be concentrated is admitted under the bundle of tubes, into the closed space provided between the plate 20 and the bottom 11 through an inlet 32 and a distributor 34.
A ce niveau, la vapeur se dégage de l'émulsion, traverse la calandre 26 et, après avoir été débarrassée des gouttelettes de liquide, est évacuée par la sortie 30.The liquid supply is adjusted so that the hydrostatic height of the liquid in the tubes is sufficient to allow the liquid-vapor emulsion produced by boiling to rise to the upper end of the tubes. At this level, the steam is released from the emulsion, passes through the calender 26 and, after having been freed from the droplets of liquid, is evacuated by the outlet 30.
The liquid overflowing from the tubes 16 flows on the plate 18, towards its periphery, is evacuated through a series of openings 36 cut in the envelope 10 and regularly distributed over its periphery and is collected in a collector 38 surrounding the envelope. The lower edge of the openings 36 is situated at the plane of the upper face of the plate 18.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the collector consists of a ring whose cross section has the shape of a lying U and whose opening is turned towards the axis of the ring; the edges of the ring are fixed, for example by welding, on the casing 10. The bottom of the collector is situated clearly below the plane of the upper face of the plate 18 and the level of the liquid in the collector is maintained , by a regulator, below this plan.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the collector consists of a tubular ring which is connected to the casing 10 by a series of tubes 40 inclined downwards, from the casing to the collector, and connected to the edge openings 36.
Other embodiments of the collector could obviously be used. without departing from the scope of the invention.
The invention makes it possible to limit the volume of the collector to the strict minimum necessary for the proper functioning of the level control system fitted to the evaporator and, consequently, to reduce this volume by benefiting from the improvement in the performance of these systems obtained these past years and possibly future improvements.
In sugar refineries, where the relatively long retention times of conventional evaporators are responsible for the coloring of the juices, especially in the last effects where the syrups are concentrated and the flow rates are lower, the invention will make it possible to adjust the volume of the collector to device flow rate and, therefore, in all cases reduce the retention time to a minimum value.
