Abstract
Description
Nuclear radiation sensor
The present invention relates to nuclear radiation sensors such as, for example, beta and gamma radiation, more particularly sensors operating in a static atmosphere.
There are already nuclear radiation sensors. They consist, for example, of a sealed enclosure comprising at least one window transparent to these radiations, at least one electrode for capturing the radiations placed in the enclosure, behind the window, and cooperating with supply means and means of processing of electrical signals modulated in a known manner at the level of said electrode. For the system to give good results with good efficiency, the enclosure is in a controlled atmosphere at a pressure close to atmospheric pressure.
There are in fact two methods for filling this type of enclosure in a controlled atmosphere. One of them consists in sweeping the interior of the enclosure continuously with the chosen atmosphere. The enclosure is thus constantly filled with an atmosphere which, on the one hand, is always at the right pressure and, on the other hand, has an optimal quality, since the current maintained allows the evacuation of any traces of oxygen which would have penetrated by the entry walls of nuclear radiation. This process obviously gives very good results, but has several drawbacks, in particular a high cost of implementation and a relatively large size for the sensor. Indeed, the implementation of said process consumes a large amount of gas entering the composition of the selected controlled atmosphere and therefore requires the use of sources of these gases in the form of reserve bottles connected to the anéainte by suitable tubing. All these bulky peripheral elements are undoubtedly an obstacle to the use of such sensors and considerably limit their possibilities of application.
A second method has been developed to try to alleviate, in particular, the drawback of the bulk. I1 consists in operating the sensor under a static atmosphere. In this case, the enclosure is filled with the chosen atmosphere, then sealed. It is true that this solution makes it possible to limit the size of the device. However, for certain types of sensors, it leads to a significant reduction in their lifespan. In fact, in addition to the fact that this static atmosphere can be polluted by exchange with the external atmosphere, there is generally a dilution of this atmosphere in the external ambient atmosphere in which the sensor itself is located. due to the fact that it is relatively difficult to produce a window which is both transparent to the nuclear radiation to be detected and impermeable to the two atmospheres on either side.
The present invention aims to try to overcome the drawbacks mentioned above in the case of sensors operating in a static atmosphere, and to provide a sensor which can operate in a static atmosphere for a longer service life than that of sensors of the same type according to the prior art, without requiring interventions too close to change the atmosphere it must contain.
More specifically, the subject of the present invention is a nuclear radiation sensor comprising an enclosure, said enclosure comprising a window transparent to said nuclear radiation, at least one electrode for detecting said radiation disposed in said enclosure behind said window and means for maintaining an atmosphere. given inside said enclosure, characterized in that said window is constituted by a stack of at least three layers of material, the intermediate layer being made of a material different from that constituting the other two layers.
Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will appear during the following description given with reference to the drawing annexed by way of illustration, but in no way limiting, in which the single figure represents an exploded perspective view of an embodiment of the invention. 'A sensor according to the invention.
The single figure represents an embodiment of a nuclear radiation sensor according to the invention. The illustrated sensor comprises an enclosure 1 generally constituted by a sealed envelope 21 made of a material such as duralumin.
This enclosure 1 comprises a window 2 made of a material transparent to the nuclear radiation to be detected. In this enclosure, behind the window 2, is arranged at least one electrode 3 for detecting radiation. This detection electrode is for example constituted by a plurality of wires 31 made of electrically conductive material such as tungsten stretched over two strips 11, 12 made of an insulating material such as that sold under the brand Teflon and fixed on the inner face 22 of the envelope. 21. Of course, these wires are connected, by sealed passages through the envelope, to processing elements situated outside the enclosure 2 and known in themselves for this type of nuclear radiation sensor.
According to a characteristic of the invention, the window 2 is formed, to improve its gas tightness without significantly affecting its transparency to radiation, by stacking at least three layers of materials 4, 5 and 6, the intermediate layer 5 being in a material different from that constituting the other two layers.
In an advantageous embodiment, the two extreme layers 4 and 6 of the window 2 are made of an aluminum-based material and the intermediate layer 5 is of a plastic material such as that which is known under the name PETP. The structures of these two types of materials are complementary and make it possible to completely seal the stacking of the layers, both with respect to gases such as argon and or carbon dioxide as with respect to l ambient air. For example, the Applicant has obtained a nuclear radiation sensor offering all the desired advantages by producing a window as described above, with three layers 4, 5 and 6 of thickness respectively equal to 9, 12 and 9 microns.
The single figure is an exploded representation of the sensor according to the invention, to allow a better understanding of its structure. However, in reality, the three layers constituting window 2 are kept in contact and stacked on top of each other, for example by means of bonding using products advantageously of the "epoxy" type.
The sensor advantageously comprises, in addition, means for protecting the window 2, more particularly the outer face 7 of its outer layer 6. These protective means are for example constituted by a protective grid 8 which also makes it possible to maintain the three layers 4, 5 and 6 stacked. Indeed, this grid 8 is located outside the enclosure by pinching the stacking of the three layers, between it and the edge 9 of the enclosure defining the outline of the window 2.
The sensor may also comprise means for keeping the stack of the three layers relatively taut and thus to prevent it from having a tendency to bend towards the interior of the enclosure 2, at the risk, for example, of coming into contact electrodes 3. These means are for example advantageously constituted by a bonding of the external face 7 of the external layer 6 on the support grid 8.
As for the support grid 8, it is for example made in a plate of metallic material, for example, stainless steel, in which a plurality of through orifices 10 is pierced.
The sensor further comprises means for filling the enclosure 1 with a given atmosphere and for maintaining this atmosphere inside the enclosure. These means are for example constituted by a filling and emptying valve disposed on the wall of the envelope 21 constituting the enclosure. Such a valve is well known in itself and, in order to simplify the drawing, an exemplary embodiment has not been shown.
As for the composition of the atmosphere given to capture, for example, gamma and / or beta radiation, it is also known: it is for example made up of a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide.
