Description
PROCEDE ET DISPOSITIF DE PEINTURE
i;ECTROSTATIQUE SUR PIECES PLASTIQUES
i; ECTROSTATIC ON PLASTIC PARTS
The present invention relates to a method and a device for electrostatic painting on plastic parts.
To paint plastic parts, by the electrostatic method, they are usually covered with a conductive primer allowing said parts to be treated exactly like metal parts.
Cette phase préparatoire complique notablement le procédé.This preparatory phase significantly complicates the process.
US Patent 2,698,814 proposes methods making it possible to limit - by compensation with charges of opposite sign - the accumulation of charges which accompanies the deposition of paint on an insulating surface.
The compensating charge generator is placed on the same side of the surface to be painted as the paint atomizer. This process cannot be suitable for certain shapes of parts, and the deposition of compensating charges disturbs the deposition of paint on the surface.
The present invention aims to provide a method and a device for electrostatic painting of surfaces of plastic parts.
The process according to the invention consists in applying the paint electrostatically to one face of the part, and it is characterized in that it consists in projecting a rapid jet of generally neutral ionized air on the opposite face of the face to be painted.
According to one characteristic, the method consists in creating the ionized air jet by producing an alternating crown discharge at the top of a metal tip transported at a high voltage and by entraining the ions in an air jet through a small nozzle.
The device according to the invention, is characterized in that it comprises an electrostatic paint applicator disposed on the side of the face to be painted of the part to be painted and an air ionization device arranged on the side of the opposite face of the face to be painted.
According to one characteristic, the air ionization apparatus comprises a metal tip brought to an alternating high voltage producing an alternating corona discharge, and an air jet leaving a small nozzle and ensuring the entrainment of the ions.
l'invention. The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to an embodiment given by way of example and represented by the drawings in which: - Figure l is a diagram of the device according to
the invention.
- La figure 2 est un schéma du générateur d'ions.- Figure 2 is a diagram of the ion generator.
peinture. - Figure 3 shows the result of a
painting.
Cet applicateur, connu en soi, envoie des particules chargées de peinture par un jet d'air vers la pièce 2.Referring to FIG. I, the device comprises an applicator l of paint electrostatically (minibol) sending paint onto the face 21 of the part to be painted 2. This applicator, known per se, sends particles loaded with paint by an air jet towards room 2.
Behind the piece to be painted 2 is arranged a device 3 producing a flow of ionized air. This device, known per se, is called "ionizer"
This device is arranged on the side of the face 22 opposite the face 21 to be painted. It produces a generally neutral ionized air jet. Its principle is based on the production of an alternative corona discharge at the top of a metal tip 35 carried at high voltage, and the entrainment of the ions by an air jet through a small metal nozzle 36. The nozzle 36 in which is housed the metal tip is provided with a compressed air inlet 34. The tip is connected via an insulating passage 33 to a shielded target 32 connected to an alternating high voltage generator 31. The assembly is connected to the earth.
The air thus enriched in ions is conductive, so that the second face of the part is connected to the ground by means of the low resistance of the jet of conductive air.
The ionizer 3 is supplied with compressed air at a few bars. The "corona" tip 35 is supplied by high voltage alternating with the mains frequency by means of a HV transformer in series with an auto-transformer, so that the voltage on the "corona" tip 35 is of the order 10,000 Volts peak / peak (3,500 effective volts) sufficient to initiate ionization of the air at the tip at each half-wave. The jet of ionized air created opposite the area to be painted a counter-electrode having a low resistance compared to the earth.
Les résultats sont illustrés par la photo de la figure 3.In order to test the device and observe the possible effect of the non-ionized air jet, painting tests on a fixed plate were carried out using the lowest paint flow rate provided by the minibol used in the test. The results are illustrated by the photo in Figure 3.
The part tested has three adjacent zones: - Zone I was exposed to the paint for five
seconds, ionizer stopped, - zone II was exposed to paint for five
seconds, air from the ionizer circulating but HT cut off, - the IIL zone in the middle, was exposed to the paint
for five seconds, ionizer powered.
In fact, the recovery was almost instantaneous in the zone m. The painting application was stopped after only three seconds for better resolution.
FIG. 3 shows a deposition of paint which is both immediate and uniform throughout the impact zone of the jet of the ionizer.
