Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a chemical laser and more particularly to a chemical laser operating by the formation of hydrochloric or hydrobromic acid.
In chemical lasers of this type, a gas containing atomic hydrogen is accelerated by passing through nozzles and chlorine or bromine gas is injected at the outlet of the nozzles so as to form, by reaction with atomic hydrogen, molecules excited by hydrochloric acid or hydrobromic acid excited in vibration and having a population inversion. These excited molecules then pass through a resonant optical cavity to create a laser beam
In these lasers, the gas containing atomic hydrogen is formed, for example, by exciting an electrical discharge with a mixture of hydrogen and a neutral gas. But these lasers are not very powerful because there is no source capable of providing a large flow of atomic hydrogen.
The present invention aims to overcome this drawback and increase the power of lasers operating by the formation of hydrochloric or hydrobromic acid.
The present invention relates to a chemical laser comprising - nozzles whose necks are arranged in a plane, these nozzles being capable of accelerating at a supersonic speed, from one side to the other of the plane, a first gas passing through the nozzles, this first gas containing atomic hydrogen, - a resonant optical cavity disposed at the outlet of the nozzles, perpendicular to the direction of gas flow in the nozzles, - means for introducing into the cavity at the outlet of the nozzles and in parallel said direction a second gas chosen from the group consisting of chlorine and bromine, the atomic hydrogen of the first gas reacting with the second gas to form molecules of an acid excited in vibration and having a population inversion, these molecules crossing the cavity for creating a laser beam, characterized in that it further comprises - an enclosure provided with two inlets and an outlet formed by the nozzles, - Means for introducing fuel into the enclosure through one of the two inlets, - means for introducing into the enclosure an oxidizer containing fluorine through the other inlet, - means for burning the fuel in the enclosure with the oxidant so as to obtain a third gas containing atomic fluorine - and means for introducing into the enclosure, just upstream from the throat of the nozzles, a fourth gas consisting of a mixture of hydrogen and a neutral gas, hydrogen of the fourth gas reacting with the atomic fluorine of the third gas to form atomic hydrogen, so as to obtain said first gas containing atomic hydrogen.
Particular embodiments of the object of the present invention are described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which - Figure t is a longitudinal sectional view of an embodiment of chemical laser according to the invention - FIG. 2 is a cross-section along a plane II-II of the laser illustrated by FIG. 1 and FIG. 3 is a partial sectional view, on a larger scale, of the nozzles of the laser illustrated by the figure 1.
In FIG. 1, a parallelepiped enclosure 1 has on one of its faces an inlet for a gas constituted by a central injector 2 and an inlet for another gas constituted by two injectors 3 and 4 arranged on either side of the injector 2. The opposite face of the enclosure is formed of juxtaposed nozzles such as 5, the necks of which are arranged in the plane II-II of this face. Figure 2 shows that the necks of the nozzles have the shape of an elongated rectangle, the rectangles being superimposed along their long sides.
The walls of the nozzles are advantageously, as shown, integral with each other so as to form a substantially cylindrical volume whose generatrices are parallel to the long sides of the rectangles and the section of which is shown schematically in FIG. 1 and on a larger scale partially on the figure 3.
The nozzle 5 shown in Figure 3 has a parallelepipedic inlet 6 whose section narrows progressively towards the neck 7 of the nozzle. Beyond the neck, a flared outlet 8 makes it possible to increase the speed of the gas propagating in the direction of arrow 9.
Figure 3 shows, in addition, the nozzle 11 and partially the nozzle 10 arranged on either side of the nozzle 5. It can be seen in this figure that the partition of the nozzle 5 has common parts with the partitions of the nozzles 10 and it so as to form the cylindrical volume mentioned above.
In each of these common parts are arranged gas supply channels 12 and 13 located upstream of the plane II-II relative to the direction of the arrow 9, these channels being parallel to the generatrices of said cylindrical volume. Channels 12 and 13 open out through pipes in the inlets such as 6 just upstream from the nozzle throat. These pipes such as 14 and 15 can be oriented perpendicular to the direction 9 of gas flow, as shown. The pipes may also be inclined at any angle relative to the direction of gas flow.
The common parts may also include channels for circulation of a cooling fluid such as a batten, these channels 16 and 17 being parallel to the channels 13 and 14 and situated upstream from the channels 13 and 14 relative to the direction of the arrow 9.
Still in the common parts but downstream of the necks of the nozzles are arranged other gas supply channels 18 and 19 parallel to the channels 13 and 14. The channels 18 and 19 open at the outlet of the nozzles parallel to the direction of the arrow 9 by flared orifices such as 20 and 21 located between the outlets of the nozzles. For example, the flared orifice 20 is located between the outlets of the nozzles 5 and 10.
Referring now to Figure 1, a resonant optical cavity is disposed at the outlet of the nozzles perpendicular to the direction of flow of the gases in the nozzles. This cavity is formed of two mirrors 22 and 23, the mirror 22 being semi-transparent. These mirrors are fixed for example on an extension 24 of the walls of the enclosure 1, this extension 24 ending in a portion 25 of progressively narrowed section. This portion 25 may include a suction device, not shown, to accelerate the passage of gases through the nozzles.
The device shown in Figure 1 operates as follows.
Gaseous fuel such as hydrogen or ethylene is made to enter pressure vessel 1 through the injector 2. Simultaneously, an oxidizer containing fluorine such as gaseous fluorine or nitrogen trifluoride is introduced into enclosure 1 by injectors 3 and 4. The combustion reaction between the fuel and the oxidizer su initiates spontaneously when the oxidant is gaseous fluorine, but it requires the use of an ignition system not shown when the oxidant is nitrogen trifluoride. The reaction is exothermic and a temperature between 1000 and 2000 degrees K is quickly reached, which causes the molecules of fluorine or nitrogen trifluoride to dissociate to obtain a gas containing fluorine in the atomic state.
Also injected into enclosure 1, just upstream from the neck of the nozzles (for example one millimeter from the neck) a mixture of hydrogen and a neutral gas such as helium, nitrogen or argon through the channels 12 and 13 and the pipes 14 and 15 formed in the wall of the nozzles. The hydrogen in this mixture reacts with the atomic fluorine of the gas resulting from the combustion to form atomic hydrogen according to the following exchange reaction:
This reaction is very rapid and very exothermic and the heat it produces compensates for the lowering of temperature caused by the dilution of hydrogen in the neutral gas.
Under these conditions, the temperature of the gas upstream from the throat of the nozzles is established at a constant value of 11 orders of 15000K and the pressure of the gases at a few bars. As a result of the difference in gas pressure existing between the inlet and the outlet of the nozzles, the gas containing atomic hydrogen is accelerated at a supersonic speed by passage through the nozzles.
Chlorine or bromine gas is then injected into the laser cavity at the outlet of the nozzles through the channels such as 19 and the flared orifices such as 21. The gas containing atomic hydrogen leaving the nozzles forms by combination with the chlorine or bromine injected with hydrochloric or hydrobromic acid molecules excited in vibration. This results in a partial or total inversion of the population in the quantum levels attached to the HCl or HBr molecule. This population inversion causes the emission of a continuous laser beam 26 passing through the semi-transparent mirror 22 along an axis 27 perpendicular to the direction of flow of the gases.
The hydrogen injected upstream from the nozzle neck can be replaced by denterium. Is then obtained by reaction with atomic fluorine atomic denterium which forms at the outlet of the nozzles' by reaction with chlorine or bromine, respectively, dentate hydrochloric acid or dentate hydrobromic acid.
So we see that we can make four types of laser noted in the following table
Injected gases Excited molecules Wavelength
H2 / Cl2 HCl 3.5 to 4 microns
D2 / Cl2 Dcl 5 microns
H2 / Br2 HBr 4 to 4.5 microns D2 / Br2 DBr 6.5 microns
The chemical laser according to the invention has the advantage of having a much higher output power than that of lasers according to the prior art. The increase in power is mainly due to the increase in the rate of atomic hydrogen in the gas passing through the nozzles.

Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described or shown, which have been given only by way of example.
Thus, the nozzles of the chemical laser according to the invention can be not only nozzles of rectangular section as described above, but also nozzles of revolution around an axis.
