Abstract

The human powered helicopter has two contra rotating rotors (1,8) lifting a cabin (13) which contains the pilot. The pilot sits on a stool (16) and uses both arms and legs to drive the rotors. The upper rotor (1) is connected directly by a shaft (2) to a hand cranks (4) via a ball joint (5). The shaft is also connected to a pulley (3) which is driven by a cable from a foot pedal operated crankshaft (12). The cable passes over guide pullies around the drive pulley 3 over two fasther guide pulleys and around the second drive pulley (7) before returning to the crankshaft. The cabin is fitted with wheels (15) and a coil spring suspension (14). ADVANTAGE - The helicopter maximises the use of the pilot's strength by combining both arm and leg drive systems.
