Abstract
Description
It is known to carry out a bacteriological treatment of liquids by irradiation with ultraviolet rays.
The principle consists in exposing the liquid to rays with a wavelength of 253.7 nm which have the property of killing everything that is alive in the water (bacteria, microbes, viruses) and more exactly of destroying the molecules of DNA base of these organisms.
The irradiation is generally carried out continuously and must be of sufficient density to exclude the subsequent reactivation of the living particles. To this end, a bombardment of intensity greater than 16,000 microwatts x sec. per cm2 is necessary and bombardments of the order of 30,000 microwatts x second per cm2 are commonly used.
The device used is formed of concentric tubes, the internal tube being that of the ultraviolet lamp, placed inside a protective tube transparent to ultraviolet which is internal to an external tube, the circulation of liquid taking place in the annular zone between the transparent tube and the external envelope.
However, for the desired result to be obtained, the water must be perfectly transparent, that is to say devoid of suspended particles capable of shielding the ultraviolet radiation on the one hand and on the other hand of materials capable of absorbing part of the energy of light rays (humic matter and dissolved iron) which requires filtration and even prior micro filtration and / or adsorption capable of retaining particles of the order of a micron.
The serious disadvantage of this obligation is that such filters are quickly clogged so that the autonomy and the operating time of such a device are short, which makes it difficult to use industrially, especially in regions of the world where it is most necessary and which are often underdeveloped regions.
The subject of the invention is an improved device which makes it possible to achieve bombardment intensities much higher than those currently existing, which results on the one hand in increased efficiency, on the other hand the possibility either of increasing the flow rate of treated liquid is to lower the filtration level necessary for its efficiency, which makes industrial exploitation of the process possible.
The device according to the invention is characterized in that it consists of at least one rigid external tubular envelope of elliptical internal section provided with a reflective internal surface containing a fluid circulation pipe coaxial to one of the focal axes of each elliptical envelope and whose wall is transparent to ultraviolet light as well as at least one tubular ultraviolet lamp, coaxial with the other focal axis of each tubular envelope, the space between the external envelope and the internal tubes being filled with a transparent fluid to ultraviolet such as air or other gas.
In the case of a plurality of envelopes of elliptical internal section, these will preferably have a common focal axis on which will be placed a common fluid circulation tube, a plurality of ultraviolet lamps being arranged on the other axes focal (not common).
In such a case, the elliptical section of each envelope is not complete but is interrupted at its intersection with the other elliptical sections, the assembly possibly reaching the general shape of a daisy.
It is advantageous to use air at a pressure lower than atmospheric pressure, the elliptical envelope being subjected to a more or less formed vacuum in order to avoid oxidation of the internal reflecting surface. We can also use a neutral gas with respect to this surface and possibly combine these two arrangements.
By the term transparent ultraviolet tube is meant a tube made of material transparent to germicidal wavelength rays, such as quartz tubes, silica or very pure glass or even some plastics.
La figure 1 est une coupe transversale de variante à une ellipse ;
La figure 2 est une perspective schématique de la variante de la figure 1 ;
La figure 3 illustre une variante à trois ellipses, en section ;
La figure 4 illustre une variante de réalisation.The invention is illustrated by the appended drawing in which
Figure 1 is a cross section of an alternative to an ellipse;
Figure 2 is a schematic perspective of the variant of Figure 1;
FIG. 3 illustrates a variant with three ellipses, in section;
Figure 4 illustrates an alternative embodiment.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, it can be seen that the device according to the invention is formed of an external tubular casing 1 of elliptical internal section, the internal surface 2 of which is reflective.
Of course, the reflecting power of the internal surface 2 must be that of a mirror in order to avoid energy losses. Such a surface can be produced in various ways, in particular by polishing, reflective electroplating, reflective plastic film or any other technique for producing mirrors.
The external envelope must be rigid in particular to allow correct geometrical location of the internal tubes 3 and 4. It can be made of metal, glass, plastic etc.
The tubes 3 and 4 are placed inside the envelope 1 along each of its focal axes F1 and
F2. The tube 3 is an ultraviolet lamp; the tube 4 is a liquid pipe 7 whose wall is transparent to ultraviolet light of the wavelength concerned.
De son côté le tube 3 est alimenté en électricité en 6.To this end, connection means 5 are provided at the liquid inlet and outlet 8 and 9. For its part, the tube 3 is supplied with electricity at 6.
The space 10 between envelope and tubes 3 and 4 is, for example, filled with air at atmospheric pressure, which avoids providing special sealing means.
However, the tubular casing 1 will preferably be closed at its two ends by partitions 11 to avoid the introduction of particles (dust) capable of forming a screen for ultraviolet light.
We can also create a more or less high vacuum in the envelope 1, use a neutral gas with respect to the surface 2 (nitrogen, rare gases) and / or combine these arrangements.
With the device of the invention, the light rays emanating from the source 3 reach the tube 4 in a convergent manner (and not diverging as in the devices previously used). As a result, the bombardment intensity of the liquid 7 is multiplied and it is easy to go from an intensity of the order of 20,000 microwatts x sec./cm2 to intensities of the order of 100,000 to 200,000 mi -crowatts x sec./cm2 even much more without increasing the power consumed thanks to a suitable choice of the diameter of the tube 4 of the flow passing through it.
According to the invention, these envelopes have a common focal axis F on which is placed the tube 4 transparent to ultraviolet and serving as a conduit for the fluid 7. The other focal axes F1, F2, F3 ... are occupied by the axes of the lamps 31 '32' 33
In this way, the irradiation of several ultraviolet lamps is concentrated on the tube 4, which makes it possible to further increase the intensity of the bombardment.
The increase in bombardment intensity of the device according to the invention makes it possible to ensure the treatment of turbid liquids, having undergone filtration limited to large particles, filtration which it is possible to carry out continuously.
As a result, the invention makes it possible to produce units for the treatment of liquids operating continuously, that is to say having an industrial character and making it possible in particular to produce a supply of drinking water from polluted water, either for villages, or for food factories.
Enveloppe externe elliptique, grand axe ....... 7 à 20 cm
Enveloppe externe elliptique, longueur ........ environ 1 m
By way of non-limiting indication, a device according to the invention may have the following dimensions
Elliptical outer envelope, long axis ....... 7 to 20 cm
Elliptical outer shell, length ........ about 1 m
Transparent tube, diameter .................... 2 to 5 cm
Ultraviolet lamp, diameter .............. 1.5 to 3 cm
Lamp power ......................... about 40 watts
Liquid flow, 3 to 6 m3 / hour
In addition to these new perspectives, in the context of the treatment of perfectly transparent water or liquids, the device according to the invention allows significant energy savings and / or a significant increase in throughput.
The device according to the invention can, as explained above, be made with different materials and in different shapes or dimensions, the example shown is not limiting. It will preferably be provided with additional devices, known per se, for controlling the effects of irradiation, a device ensuring the interruption of operation in the event of failure or wear of the ultraviolet lamp or in the event of clouding of the quartz tube by deposition of impurities.
It should be noted in this regard that the configuration of the device allows easy cleaning of the surface of the tube 4 which is in contact with the liquid to be treated.
FIG. 4 shows that the elliptical nature relates to the internal face 2 of the envelope 1, the external face 12 of which can take other forms, for example when the envelope is made of two half-shells 13, 14.
The invention has been more particularly described in relation to the irradiation of water, but it can be used for the irradiation of various liquids, for example, edible or organic liquids, with a view to their conservation (fruit juices , serums, milk), or even gas.
