Abstract

A bar code reader is used to input bar code data into a computer. The bar codes are printed directly onto the jacket of the file or are pre-printed on an adhesive label. These codes contain the number of the file or its usual reference. The computer gives the identification in alphabetic form. A keyboard contains user keys which carry a number of a user and allows that user to withdraw a file. The computer programme provides information that the file has been removed and its present location or user details. This information is available to all users. When a file has been used it is returned by placing it in front of the bar code reader and by the user pressing the RETURN key.
