Abstract

Applicator comprises a tubular body, open at both ends. A piston is inserted into the discharge end of the body and moved inwards until arrested by stops inside the body. At this stage a free space exists inside the body between the piston and the discharge end. This free space is filled with a cream etc. and the outlet of the discharge end is sealed with a removable plug or cap. A piston rod is inserted into the body from the end opposite to the discharge end. The rod is used to displace the piston and thus to eject cream from the discharge end of the body. All parts of the applicator are pref. made of plastic, e.g. the body and piston rod of polypropylene, the removable end cap or plug of polythene and the piston of an elastomer. The stops inside the body are pref. the ends of longitudinal ribs extending for the remainder of the length of the body. The piston rod pref. has longitudinal slots which correspond with and engage the ribs which are a sliding fit in the slots. The applicator is of simple and inexpensive construction and can be treated as disposable. It offers a standard of hygiene acceptable for medical requirements, e.g. in gynaecology.
