Abstract

The use of a series connected circuit, comprising a resistor and capacitor connected in parallel, permits the useage of low voltage (6-24V) halogen lamps from the ac mains supply, with the capacitor value being chosen to limit the current in the lamp to its nominal value. No transformer is needed, reducing the cost of the unit. The capacitor limits the rate of rise of current in the lamp, reducing the surge current at switch on and thus reducing thermal and mechanical shock on the lamp filament. The resistor connected across the capacitor serves the additional purpose of discharging the capacitor when the supply switch is opened.

Description

The present invention notably relates to the operation of any of any incandescent and halogen lamps and this at low voltage.

These light sources whose voltage is often 6, 12 or 4 volts,> can be supplied from the mains voltage most often 220 volts, from one or more capacitors, according to their capacity value, and this in series with the light source, which allows the lamp to be supplied at its nominal operating voltage, and this according to the value of the capacitor in Mierofarad compared to f to the wattage of the lamp and its voltage in volts.

In addition the lamp is preserved from the brutal shock is the ignition, because the charge of the capacitor causes a progressive rise in tension in the lamp, but in a few milliseconds, which produces not perceptible to the eye.

The resistance allows the capacitor to discharge when the lamp goes out.

The advantages of the principle are as follows:
Lower cost price than transformer supply.

The single appended figure is a diagram of the operating principle. The mains voltage is connected at 1, in principle 210 volts AC when the switch 5 is closed and the capacitor 7 discharges and discharges through the low voltage lamp 2 thus supplying the voltage necessary for its supply, the resistor 4 used to discharge the capacitor when
switch 5 is open.
