Abstract

A heat exchanger of the type in which a first fluid is circulated through a main passage in which a transverse tube bundle carries a heating or cooling fluid. Each tube of the bundle has its opposite ends carried by opposite walls of the main passage. Two adjacent tubes are connected in series by a 180 deg. return bend on the outside of the main passage. Each tube is mounted with each of its two ends slidably engaged inside a coaxial sleeve which is itself engaged slidably in an axial direction in a hole through the adjacent wall of the main passage. Leakproof, annular joints are fitted between the sleeve and the tube and between the sleeve and the surface of the hole in the wall. The 180 deg. return bends joining adjacent tubes are made of flexible pipe of which the ends are joined to the two sleeves of adjacent tubes. Pref. the tubes have radial exterior gills and each tube is shorter than the distance between opposed walls of the main passage, the coupling sleeve projecting into the inside of the passage. This is an indirect heat exchanger which is partic. suitable for heating viscous fluids, e.g. massecuite in sugar refinement, by circulating steam or hot water through the tube bundle. It now becomes possible to remove and renew any single tube which becomes defective. Previously defective tubes had to be blanked off and could only be renewed when the complete tube bundle was replaced.

Description

The present invention relates to heat exchangers constituted by a duct through which a first fluid circulates and a bundle of tubes arranged transversely in said duct, the two ends of which are supported by two opposite walls of said duct and which are traversed by a second fluid , at least some of these tubes being connected in series by means of elbows located outside said conduit and connecting the adjacent ends of two tubes.

In particular, such an exchanger can be used to heat pasty products, such as a candy massecuite, using hot water or steam.

In known exchangers of this type, the tubes are fixed by welding or expansion on the opposite walls of the duct and cannot be dismantled. If one of the tubes in the bundle is pierced, it can possibly be isolated, but if the number of defective tubes is large, it is necessary to change the entire bundle of tubes as well as the portion of the conduit which supports them.

The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback and to allow quick and easy replacement of defective tubes.

The exchanger which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that the tubes are slidably mounted at each of their ends in a ring which is itself sliding knurled in a bore in the adjacent wall of the duct and which is provided with seals ensuring sealing , on the one hand, between the tube and the ring and, on the other hand, between the ring and said wall, and in that the elbows connecting the bundle tubes together are constituted by flexible pipes whose ends are connected from the outer end of the rings.

In the case where the tubes are provided with fins preventing their disassembly by longitudinal displacement, through the bores of the wall of the conduit, the tubes are less than the distance separating the opposite walls of the conduit which supports said tubes and the rings protrude inside said conduit. This construction makes it possible to dismantle the tubes from the inside of the duct, after having removed the rings to release the ends of the tubes.

Means are provided for detachably fixing the rings on the walls of the duct. The rings may, for example, include a flange applied to the external face of the wall of the duct by clamping means integral with the wall.

Stops are provided on the rings to limit the longitudinal movements of the tubes; these stops can be constituted by a circular shoulder formed inside the rings.

The connection of the flexible elbows to the rings can be carried out by fitting the end of the elbows onto a tubular extension of the rings outside the duct.

Other characteristics of the invention will appear on reading the description which follows and refers to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of nonlimiting example, an embodiment of the invention and in which
FIG. 1 is a view partially in elevation and partially in section of a heat exchanger in accordance with the invention this and
Figure 2 is an enlarged view showing the mounting of the tubes.

The exchanger shown in FIG. 1 is constituted by a duct 10 of square or rectangular section and with a vertical axis and by a bundle of tubes 12 passing through the duct. These tubes which are provided with fins 13 are arranged horizontally, in several superimposed rows, over the entire section of the duct. The fins of the neighboring tubes may be in contact with each other or slightly spaced as shown in the drawings. The tubes of the lower row and those of the upper row (not shown) are connected to supply and exhaust manifolds, such as 14, by rubber hoses 16. The corresponding tubes of the different rows are connected in series by rubber elbows 18. The product to be heated or cooled flows in the conduit 10, between the tubes 12, and the heating or cooling fluid circulates inside the tubes.

The tubes 12, the length of which is less than the space of the walls 20 of the conduit 10, are supported at their ends by rings 22 slidably mounted in bores of these walls and projecting inside the conduit. The tubes are slidably mounted inside the rings and a shoulder 24 limits their longitudinal movements; beyond this shoulder the inside diameter of the rings is substantially equal to that of the tubes.

The rings 22 are held in place by clamping devices constituted by screws 28 and washers or flat irons 30 which rest on the collars 32 of the rings and press them against the external face of the walls 20 of the duct.

O-rings 34 and 36 housed in circular grooves of the rings 22 provide sealing between the tubes and the rings and between the latter and the walls 20, respectively.

The rings 22 comprise an outer tubular extension 38 on which the ends of the pipes 16 or the elbows 18 are fitted. The sealing of this fitting is carried out by gluing or by means of clamps.

In order to dismantle a defective tube and replace it, the screws 28 which fasten the rings supporting the tube are unscrewed and the rings are moved outwards to clear the ends of the tube; this displacement of the rings is made possible by the flexibility of the pipes 16 or the elbows 18. If the tube is part of the upper row or of the lower row, it can then be removed by the corresponding end of the conduit. If this is not the case, the corresponding tubes must first be disassembled in the same way from the rows above or below the defective tube. To install a new tube, the reverse operations are carried out.

Many modifications can be made to the embodiment described by the use of equivalent technical means and it should be understood that all of these modifications are within the scope of the invention.
