Abstract

The pedal drive for a bicycle has, on each side of the pedal housing, a cam (9) integral with the frame and eccentric to the axis of the pedal crank (6). The cam is connected to the pedal crank and has a peripheral groove (10) of oval or elliptical form. The pedal crank is formed of two sets of arms (1,2,,11) articulated in pairs to form a deformable parallelogram. This deforms around axes (3,4,12,13,19,20) defined by dogs (21) which move in the groove (10) during pedalling. The two intermediate pivots (3,4) are mounted on links (11) fixed to the axis (12) of the dogs.

Description

The present invention relates to the field of cycling and especially relates to a new type of cranks for crankset.

In recent years, we have sought to increase the power of the lever arm in a cycle by increasing the length of the crank without however exceeding the ideal limit imposed by the path of the foot on the pedal. To this end, we have already described various types of so-called sliding cranks constituted by telescopic elements the length of which can vary according to the force exerted on the pedals and which are associated with mechanisms making it possible to transform the usual rotary movement into reciprocating rectilinear movement, for example by fitting - on each side of the bottom bracket - fixed oval cams eccentric relative to the plate and provided with ribs which circulate bearings connected to a lug secured to one of said telescopic elements (French patent No. 77.19718 published under No. 2,356,550; Swiss patent No. 598,050 English patent published under No. 2,050,971; French patent application No. 80,22,758).

These devices should normally provide a significant improvement in pedaling efficiency thanks to the use of a long crank length at the time of maximum support on the pedal and to the shortening of this crank during the suspension of the effort. . However, the significant risks of friction harm the interest of such telescopic cranks.

To overcome these drawbacks, the invention proposes a new crankset mode in which the cranks are broken down into several arms hinged together and which on the one hand makes it possible to solve the friction problems and, on the other hand, to provide more of force to the user thanks to a more accentuated elongation of the crank lever in the phase of the pedaling cycle where the force is exerted by depressing the pedal.

In such a system, use is made, in a manner known per se, of the use on each side of the bottom bracket, of a cam provided with an ovoid or elliptical peripheral groove eccentric relative to the axis of the bottom bracket and in which a ball bearing circulates. However, according to the general characteristic of the invention, the crank is constituted by at least two series of articulated arms two by two in deformable parallelogram around axes, one of which is provided with a ball bearing which circulates in said groove during the pedaling cycle.

According to a first embodiment, on the two intermediate articulations of the two series or pairs of crank arms, spacers are mounted which are fixed, at one of their ends, to said ball bearing.

'In accordance with another, more simplified embodiment, the crank comprises - on each side of the pedal box - only two series of arms articulated at an intermediate level of the crank clip and' of the pedal, one axes being common to the aforementioned ball bearing.

Other embodiments and variants will appear in the more detailed description which follows, with reference to the schematic drawings of the attached plates which represent

In the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3, we can see an articulated crank of the invention which essentially comprises: a first series 1, 1 ′ and a second series 2, 2 ′ of arms articulated intermediate on the axes 3, 4, 19, 19 ', 20 and connected on the one hand to the crank fastener 5 blocked on the axis 6 of the crankset and, on the other hand, to a pedal 7 of axis 8; a cam 9 provided with a peripheral groove 10, integral with the frame of the bicycle and whose special shape must be studied to ensure the ideal circumference of the path of the pedal; finally a couple of spacing rods 11, I1 'which are fixed to the ball bearing axis 12 circulating in the groove 10 of the eccentric cam. It will be noted that these rods can be connected and articulated on the movable arms 1, 1 'and 2, 2' by axes 13 distinct from axes 3, 4 or directly by these latter axes, then common (see FIG. 3). Of course, as said above, the views represent only one side of the pedal and we obviously find on the other side the same type of articulated crank.

In operation, the crank fastener 5 drives the axis 6 of the crankset thanks to the pressure exerted by the pedal 7 and transmitted to the series of arms 1, 1 'and 2, 2' articulated on the axes 3, 4, 19, 19 'and 20. The bearing 21, by circulating in the ovoid groove 10, causes the above-mentioned crank arms to be moved apart or brought closer together by spacing links II, II' so as to make the elongation coincide and the bearing force on the pedal 7 at the time of the extension of the leg, which has the effect of increasing the distance and the power between the axis 8 of the pedal and the axis 6 of rotation of the crankset .

Figure 4 illustrates an alternative embodiment in which the cam 9 of the previous figures is replaced by a disc 14 provided with a flange or tread 15 on the two faces of which move the two ball bearings 16 and 17 connected with spacing rods (11, il '), such a device which can also be adapted to one of the series of arms (1, 1' or 2, 2 ') of the crank.

In FIG. 5 (and the partial section in FIG. 6) one can see another alternative embodiment of the system of FIG. 1 but according to a simplified construction in which the two spacing rods 11, 11 ′ have been eliminated. In this case, the bearing 21 is fixed directly on the axis 3 where the movable arms 1, 1 'are articulated. According to this embodiment, when the groove 10 is ovalized, it is advisable to provide - during the phase when the crank descends and remains in the position of maximum elongation - bearing stops 18 which thus make it possible to relieve the effort of the bearing 21 when the maximum pressure is exerted on the pedal 7. Such a device is more economical but it obviously does not make it possible to perfectly coordinate the pedaling.

Of course, other alternative embodiments can be implemented according to the principle described above without departing from the scope of the invention.
