Abstract

The watertight seal consists of a flexible '0' ring (12) which is inserted in a housing formed in the casing (10), e.g a gearbox. The casing may be in the as-cast condition requiring no machining. The cover (11) has a corresponding housing (16) formed by pressing. The housing is designed to have a width smaller than the diameter of the sealing ring in order to compress the latter on assembly. The amount of compressive force (F1,F2) is calculated as a function of the duty of the seal.
