Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a wear indicator for friction element, in particular brake pad, suitable for rubbing on a counter-material constituting a movable track, in particular disc, crown, drum or brake bandage, element comprising a support intended to cooperate with a control device and a friction lining adapted to be pressed along an application face on said track in response to the action of a force developed by the control device on the support, this element being provided with 'an electrical conductor set back from said application face, so as to be spaced from the track as long as the lining is not worn enough and to come into contact with the track and to cause a wear indicator signal when the packing is worn.
Usually, the electrical conductor consists of a conductive wire wrapped in a sheath and extending over
the support which is metallic. The wire must have sufficient mechanical strength, in other words a sufficient diameter, to withstand the stresses during the pressure molding of the lining. The diameter of the wire is further increased by the presence of the insulating sheath. The wire therefore imporently imporates the usable thickness of the lining. As a result, the wear indicator signal intervenes before the lining is completely worn, which undoubtedly plays in favor of safety, but causes an unnecessary loss of lining thickness.
To overcome this drawback, it has already been proposed to partially drown the conductor surrounded by its sheath in a groove formed in the metal support, but this results in a complication and an increased cost of the production.
The subject of the present invention is a wear indicator for a friction element, in particular a brake pad, suitable for rubbing on a counter-material constituting a moving track, in particular a disc, crown, drum or brake bandage, which is free from the various drawbacks. above and which allows an excellent signaling of the wear of the lining, with a simple, convenient and inexpensive construction.
According to the invention, this wear indicator is characterized in that a fabric formed at least in part of metallic wires and constituting said wear indicator conductor is arranged along the interface of the support and the lining.
Thanks to this arrangement, the metallic threads of the wear indicator fabric can be very thin due to their multiplicity.
In addition, the lining and the support made of electrically insulating material are advantageously provided. This makes it possible to avoid coating the wires with an insulating sheath, which further reduces the diametrical size of these wires.
As a result, the friction lining can be worn to its extreme useful limit, before the wear indicator signal is triggered.
According to another characteristic, the metallic threads of the wear indicator fabric are certain of the warp threads of the fabric andis that the other warp threads and the weft threads of the fabric can be chosen freely and are for example insulating.
Thanks to this arrangement, the fabric can easily be produced using a common type of loom.
In a preferred embodiment, the metallic wires of the wear indicator fabric are connected to the positive pole of a battery by a circuit having an indicator light while the track, provided conductive, is grounded.
According to another characteristic, the support is made of composite material comprising in particular layers of insulating fabric superimposed and impregnated with an insulating binder and it is the last layer adjacent to the lining which comprises the conductive wear indicator wires. Thanks to this arrangement, these wear indicator conductive wires arranged along the interface of the support and the lining form part of the support rather than of the lining, which allows it to be worn to its full thickness before the signal wear indicator is not triggered. In addition, such an arrangement makes it possible to signal a possible detachment of the lining.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the layers of insulating fabric of the support are made of glass while the binder is a phenolic resin and the friction lining is itself provided in a material compatible with that of the support and comprises a binder formed by a resin of the formophenolic type, fibers and fillers.
Preferably, a glue based on phenolic resin is interposed between the last layer of the support forming a wear indicator and the friction lining.

The embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 4 relates, by way of non-limiting example, an application of the invention to a disc brake for a motor vehicle. This disc brake comprises a rotating metal disc 10 (FIGS. 1 and 2) having two opposite friction tracks 11. With each track 11, a brake pad 12 cooperates in friction. The pad 12 comprises a support 13 cooperating with a control device C such as a hydraulic piston 15 and a friction lining 14 carried by the support 13.
In the nonlimiting example shown, the two plates 12 and their arrangements are symmetrical with respect to the disc 10.
Mounting means are provided to maintain each plate 12 opposite its associated track 11 while allowing it to approach it and comprises, in the example shown in Figures 2 and 3, a fixed housing 16 in which the wafer 12 is received. This housing 16 has lateral surfaces A and B for absorbing the braking reaction.
The friction lining 14 of each pad 12 is adapted to be pressed along an application face 18 on the track 11 in response to the action of a force developed by the piston 15 on the support 13, the reaction being collected at A or B.
The friction lining 14 of the wafer 12 wears during operation. To make it possible to signal that the lining 14 is worn, the plate 12 is provided with a wear indicator generally designated by 19. This wear indicator is formed by an electrical conductor disposed behind the application face 18, so as to be spaced from track 11 as long as the lining is not worn enough (Figure 2) and to come into contact with track 11 and to cause a wear indicator signal when the lining 14 is worn.
In the example shown in Figure 1, the wear indicator conductor 19 is connected to the positive p81e 20 of a battery 21 by a circuit 22 having an indicator 23, while the negative pole 24 of the battery 21 and the disc metallic conductor 10 are grounded at 25 and 26 respectively.
The lining 14 and the support 13 are both provided electrically insulating and the wear indicator conductor 19 is formed by a fabric 27 (FIG. 4) including certain warp threads designated by 28 and represented in black. are metallic, so that the other warp threads N and the weft threads T are insulating and shown in white.
The wear indicator fabric 27 is arranged along the interface of the support 13 and the lining 14 (FIG. 2).
A metal wire 29 (FIG. 3) is placed in the direction of the weft T on the insulating support 13 on the side of the friction lining 14 and is spot welded 30 to each of the metal wires 28 which extend in the direction of channel N of the wear indicator fabric of the support. This wire 29 is connected at 31 to the electrical signaling circuit 22.
As long as the lining 14 is not worn enough, the wires 28 are moved away from the application face 18. The circuit 22 is not supplied. LED 23 is off.
When the lining 14 is completely worn in any location, the wires 28 close to this location are allowed to touch the disk 10. The circuit 22 is supplied.
The indicator 23 lights up. The user knows that he must replace the brake pad.
Preferably, the support 13 is made of composite material comprising layers of insulating fabric, in particular glass fabric, superimposed and impregnated with an insulating binder, in particular phenolic resin and it is the last layer adjacent to the lining which comprises the conducting wires. wear indicators 28, while the lining 14 is itself made of material compatible with that of the support 13 and comprises a binder formed by a resin of the formophenolic type, fibers and fillers.
Non-limiting examples of manufacturing the brake pad 12 provided with the wear indicator are given below.
EXEMPLE 1
To manufacture the support 13, a sufficient number of layers are stacked formed by plies of glass fabrics and pre-impregnated with a phenolic resin, to finally obtain a plate of the thickness necessary for the production of the support 13. The last fold of the fabric which is contiguous with the lining 14 has this particular with respect to the other folds of the fabric forming the support that a chain wire N out of ten, design by 28, is made of brass (figure 4) while the other wires of chain N and the weft threads T are made of glass as for the rest of the support.
Such a plate is baked for 45 minutes at a temperature of 1700C, under a pressure of 10 bars.

This mixture which is intended to form the filling 14 is first pelletized under a pressure of 150 bars and is then molded onto the support 13 which has been described above and this for a period of 8 minutes at a temperature of 1450C and under a pressure of 375 bars.
It should be noted that the various layers may be layers of fabric, and / or mat and / or fragments of fibers.
EXEMPLE 2
The procedure is as in Example 1, but the folds of fabric are cut and placed in a mold having the shape
of the support 13 including the outer fabric, one wire in fifteen of the chain N, designated by 28, is metallic, for example copper or brass.
Cooking is carried out in a mold for fifteen minutes at a temperature of 1700C under a pressure of 10 bars.
After overmolding, one of the slices perpendicular to the chain N of the fabric having the metallic threads is sanded down and a metallic strip acting as wire 29 is crimped to connect the metallic threads 28 of the indicator fabric 19 to the electrical signaling circuit 22.
EXEMPLE 3
EXAMPLE 3
A composite support is prepared by placing in a mold of suitable shape a ply of glass fabric 325 gr / m2 pre-impregnated with phenolic resin and a phenolic resin compound loaded with 35% 3 mm glass fibers is introduced, then a glass fabric of 300 gr / m2.
This support is baked in the mold for 10 minutes at a temperature of 1500 ° C. under a pressure of 150 bars.

The pastillage of material which will compose the friction lining is carried out on a metallic mesh made up of metallic threads covered with glass.
Then this pellet is overmolded on the composite support 13 previously defined, the mesh being on the side of the support, for 10 minutes at a temperature of 1500C under a pressure of 150 bars.
It will be appreciated that the wear indicator according to the invention, providing the brake pad 12, allows wear of the friction lining 14 over the entire thickness thereof before triggering the wear signal. The simple construction and convenient manufacture of the brake pad provided with the wear indicator will also be appreciated.
In addition, thanks to the invention, wear detection is carried out everywhere over the entire extent of the lining.
It should be noted that the lining and the support may be more or less conductive and, in this case, the wear indicator wires are coated with an insulating sheath.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the preceding description but embraces any variant, in particular in the manner adopted for transmitting the wear indication signal to the user.
