Abstract

A continuous digester is for generating methane etc. from fermenting manure. The manure is fed into a fermentation chamber through which it is displaced in a horizontal direction. Displacement of the manure is pref. effected by a ram which is moved horizontally across the open bottom of a feed hopper which is kept full of stable litter and/or liq. manure. The ram is pref. suspended from a support carriage above the digester so that no mechanical linkage is fouled by the manure. The ram is contoured to close off the bottom of the hopper as it displaces manure into the chamber. Pref. the manure has to be pushed through a sieve to enter the chamber. This prevents backflow of manure as the ram is retracted. A gas outlet from the digester is pref. fitted with a piston which can be displaced to break the crust on top of the fermenting material. Prodn. of methane etc. from manure. No need to liquefy and pump the raw material, so energy input costs are reduced.
