Abstract

The workpieces consist e.g. of a large cylinder or part of a boiler; and the accessories consist of gauges, cooling fins, anchor pins for a thermally insulating lining or other parts. The accessories are attached to the workpiece(1) by friction welding. The pref. welding plant consists of a bed on which a large piece(1) can be rotated; and above the bed is a horizontal jib arm driven vertically along a pillar. The jib arm carries a friction welding machine which can be driven along the arm and carries a chuck for rotating the accessory to be welded to piece(1). Used to reduce mfg. time for vessels, etc. employed in refineries or in the prodn. of petrochemicals.
