Abstract

Insulation for a multicore cable is made from polymers or copolymers of a methyl pentene, for a combination of resistance to elevated temperatures (greater than 150 deg.C) and hydrocarbons, e.g. for power, signal or instrumentation cables for petroleum exploration. The insulation is pref. to ethylene-propylene copolymer insulation, for heat resistance, rubber insulation, for use in pressurised enviroments, or polyfluorocarbon insulation, for lower cost. Patent describes a multicore cable with armoured (steel wire) sheathing, where the insulation and coaxial spacer for each of the series of six strand cables is made from a methylpentene polymer. Opt. the insulation is coated with a semi-conductor material, e.g. a carbon-based suspension.
