Dans les équipements de prospection pétrolière, on se sert de câbles électriques de transport d'énergie, de commande et de transmission d'informations. Les éléments d'isolation de tels câbles, qui sont enfouis dans les puits de forage, doivent supporter des efforts mécaniques très importants dans des conditions de température et de pression très élevées et, ceci, en présence du milieu agressif offert par des hydrocarbures. Les isolations en élastomère n'autorisent qu'une faible résistance à l'éclatement des jonctions lors de la remontée des câbles qui travaillent dans des puits contenant du gaz sous pression. Quant aux résines fluocarbonées, si elles offrent un comportement relativement satisfaisant, elles sont d'un prix de revient très élevé.
