Abstract

Supports are pretreated to be subsequently thermoprinted by transfer by contacting under heat and pressure with a temporary support carrying sublimable inks or dyes. The pretreatment comprises impregnating or coating the supports with a thermoplastic polyvinyl acetate resin, the novel feature being that the resin is plasticised. Process allows transfer printing or dyeing to be applied to a variety of fabrics (nonwoven, woven or knitted) in the form of strips, panels or plates and based on natural, vegetable, synthetic, animal and/or mineral fibres. In prior transfer printing was restricted to only a few synthetic fibres e.g. polyester, acrylics, polyamides. The prints have good general fastness.

Description

 The invention relates to printing by transfer, at high temperature, of dyes or sublimable inks carried by a temporary support of transfer paper.

It relates, in particular, to the thermal printing of woven or knitted fabrics, nonwovens or other articles, in strips, in panels or in plates, based on natural vegetable, artificial or synthetic, animal or natural fibers. mineral, alone or in mixture, of unrolled wood sheets, or even of metallic articles.

Its purpose is to extend to a very wide variety of textile fibers the field of application of thermal printing, currently limited to polyester fibers and to certain categories only of artificial and synthetic fibers, acrylic, acetate, polyamide, etc. , alone or in mixtures, and to make it possible to obtain, by simple means, products having very high qualities, in particular with regard to the vividness of the colors, their penetration and their solidity in washing, rubbing, ironing, and other.

To this end, according to the invention, the supports intended to receive thermal printing by hot contact and under pressure o ~ or by vacuum press, or other means compatible with the process, with a temporary support carrying the inks or dyes, are subjected to an impregnation or coating pretreatment using a thermoplastic synthetic resin based on polyvinyl acetate plasticized or not, with butyl phthalate, said resin being used in the form of an aqueous emulsion with an emulsifier such as, in particular, a polyvinyl alcohol.

The provisional support is preferably constituted by a transfer paper printed for printing, for example one of those of the Firms SUBLISTATIC, RANSFERTEK, CASTRE INDUSTRIES Ltd, In England, MIROGLIO, Italy, and, in general, by printers using sublimable inks or dyes.

EXAMPLE 1
A strip of cotton fabric with a plain weave, desized and bleached is continuously passed through a bath consisting of an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate plasticized with butyl phthalate at a concentration of 20 to 25%, then expressed and dried on oar. The strip of fabric thus pretreated is then subjected, in a calender, to a temperature of 2200C to thermal printing by transfer of the dyes between the strip of transfer paper and the strip of fabric, the contact time being order of 20 seconds.

EXAMPLE 2
A strip of fabric with a plain weave, comprising 70% cotton and 30% polyamide fibers, which has been dyed, is continuously passed through a bath consisting of an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate plasticized with butyl phthalate at a concentration of 20 to 25%, then expressed and dried on an oar. The strip of fabric thus pretreated is then subjected, in a calender, to a temperature of 220 ° C. to thermal printing by transfer of the dyes between the strip of transfer paper and the strip of fabric, the contact time being 1 '. o e of 20 seconds.

EXAMPLE 3
A strip of dyed twill fiber fabric is passed continuously through a bath consisting of an aqueous emulsion of unplasticized polyvinyl acetate at a concentration of 20 to 25%, then expressed and dried on a ream. The strip of fabric thus pretreated is cut, and is then subjected on a press at a temperature of 2200c to lathermo-impression by transfer of the dyes between the transfer paper and the fabric, the contact time being of the order of 20 seconds.

EXAMPLE 4
A thin sheet of unrolled wood is coated by scraping with an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate plasticized with butyl phthalate at a concentration of 20 to 25%, then expressed and dried on a ream. The wood sheet thus pretreated is then subjected, in a calender, to a temperature of 2200C to thermal printing by transfer of the dyes between the strip of transfer paper and the strip of fabric, the contact time being of the order of 20 seconds.

1.- Process for the pretreatment of supports intended to receive a thermal printing by transfer by hot contact and under pressure with a temporary support carrying sublimable inks or dyes, characterized in that said supports are subjected to a pretreatment impregnation or coating using a thermoplastic synthetic resin based on polyvinyl acetate. 2.
