Abstract

Biuret-structure polyisocyanates are prepd. by reacting 1,6-hexamethylene-diisocyanate at 150-170 degrees C with water which is delivered into the reaction zone in the form of vapours in a mixt. (moisture content 0.1-2.0 Kg/Kg) with air or an inert gas at 110-130 degrees C. The polyisocyanates are useful for the mfr. of paints and varnishes, e.g. light and weather resistant polyurethanes. The polyisocyanates (molecular mass about 800) have a relatively low viscosity and high isocyanate gp. content (about 23.59%). No polyurea is formed, so that losses of the diisocyanate are reduced and no filtration step is required. The process is single-staged, technologically simple and continuous.
