Abstract

Part of the soln. in the HCl bath is fed to a still for recovery of HCl as a distillate which is recycled to the pickling bath; the sump in the still consists of a soln. of FeCl2near to satn., and this soln. is removed and used in other processes. Fresh HCl is also added to the pickling bath to maintain its concn. at 2-4 normal. The flow of the pickling soln. to the still is pref. adjusted so the pickling bath contains 30-70 g/l FeC12. The pickled workpieces are pref. rinsed in water which is then fed through a cationic exchange resin. Subsequent elution of the resin by a soln. which is min. 4-normal HCl is used to reclaim FeC12 returned to the pickling bath. Method provides a low cost method of recuperating chemicals and avoiding environmental pollution, esp. when pickling steel prior to hot dip coating is molten Zn.
