Abstract

To determine the angular position of the pinion driven directly or indirectly by the shaft of an engine, a pinion provides synchronisation information to an electronic ignition system. Measurement of position is by two sensors overcoming inaccuracy at high rotational speeds. The two sensors (1,3) are placed side by side facing the pinions (2) toothed (4) perimeter. The output from one sensor (3) is fed to a pulse shaper (5) which is also fed by the rectified and smoothed (6) output from the second sensor (1). The signal (U6) acts as a reference or negative threshold level determining the position of the first sensors output to be used by the shaper to provide a constant height and width square-wave output (U5) whatever the rotational speed of the pinion.
