Abstract

The brushless DC motor uses a light source and detectors to determine the rotor angular position with respect to the stator. The detector positions are displaced by an angle of pi/n or pi-pi/n where n= the number of detectors, using a polarising element integral with the rotor and positioned between the detector and the light source. The detector then control, as a function of the light level being received, the winding current values. The light source may be remote using a fibre optic to bring it into the required position or a hemispherical reflector (25) directing the light to each detector (1) from a single source (20). The source and reflector are positioned in line with the rotor shaft (34), the polarising filters (26,27) being attached to the rotor end-face.
