Abstract

Installation is for generating methane fuel gas by anaerobic fermentation of farm manure, stable litter etc.. While fermenting, the manure is conveyed through a horizontal tunnel. The vol. of the tunnel is established in proportion to the output of gas required. The tunnel cover is pref. of a cross-section similar to a hood. In operation, the open ends of the tunnel become sealed to atmos. by manure. This results in a build up of gas pressure inside the tunnel which is sufficient to transfer gas to a holding vessel or gasometer. The exterior of the tunnel is pref. lagged to retain heat of fermentation. Manure can now be conveyed directly to the tunnel from the cattle shed sump. This inexpensive installation eliminates man-handling of the raw material right through to the compost stage.
