Abstract

The automatic recoil sprung (7) disc brake is used on a crank handle (12) operated pulley wheel, to lock the wheel axle (2) against rotation unless an input torque is applied to the handle. It has balls (27) on ramps to promote axial brake lining (5,6) divergence during an initial free rotation of an input sleeve (10). This houses a ball bearing (18) mounted trailing end of the axle, abutting a fixed housing (H) for the axle and a sprung (7) flanged (17) sleeve (3), accommodating the movable brake linings (6). Four uniform half spherical flange (17) sockets (14) locate a ball (27). The opposite radial sleeve (10) zones have tangential 'V' notches. An axial (2) key in an oversize sleeve (10) bore groove allows some 15 degrees handle (12) rotation before the drive is taken up. During this rotation the balls (27) climb the ramped sides of the 'V' notches, compressing the spring (7) causing the brake linings (5,6) to move apart and, allowing the axle (2) to rotate.
