Abstract

New thiophene derivs. of formulae (I) and (II) are claimed: (where R1 and R2 are H, halogen, alkyl, aroyl or acyl, R3 is arylthio, R4 is H or alkyl, X is Cl, Br or I). Also claimed are processes for preparing cpds. (I) and (II) and for converting them to known thiophene-2-acetic acid derivs. The various thiophene-2-acetic acid derivs. are useful in the prepn. of synthetic penicillin(s) and cephalosporin(s). A typical cpd. (I) is alpha-phenylthio-2-thiophene-acetic acid. In an example, this is prepd. from alpha-trichloromethyl-2-thiophene-methanol and thiophenol.
