Abstract

The slag contains 0.5-3% Co as oxide, 30% max. iron oxide, and small amts. of Ni and Cu; and the molten slag is mixed with a fine reducing agent contg. min. 80% and pref. min. 90% iron. The pref. reducing agents are molten iron contg. max. 4.5% C and max. 3% Si; or solid iron crushed to size 0.5 mm; or crushed solid iron formed into an agglomerate with the slag and heated at 700-1000 degrees C to reduce all the Co oxide, Fe, and possibly Ni and Cu. Molten slag may alternately be fed in counter-current to molten iron in a two stage process for winning Co. Used for winning Co from slags with low Co content and obtd. during the treatment of Co ores which may contain Cu.
