Abstract

The annular seal is used on a revolving shaft (2) at the point where it enters e.g. a gear housing (1), using a lip (4) which contacts the shaft and is immobilised on the housing (1) by a magnetic connection. A plastics seal (3) of an assymetric 'U' section has the long leg (7) cranked to form the lip (4). The seal (3) is housed on a retaining ring (6) of which a plane annular surface (11) abuts the internal face (12) of a housing cover (13), the magnetic connection being between the ring and the cover. Additional holding may be obtained by using cover integral studs (16) in ring (6) sockets (17). Alternatively there is a labyrinth seal on a shaft sleeve with spiral grooves which throw back any oil seepage.
