Abstract

The electromagnet has a tubular armature (10) which by end plates (12a, 12b) with central holes (12e) through which a core (15) is slidable. The armature (10) contains an annular coil (13) with terminals (14a, 14b) projecting through one end plate (12b). The core (15) is cylindrical with two enlarged frusto-conical end portions (15a, 15b) tapering in the same direction. The core, armature (10) and end plates are all at high permeability low remanence magnetic material such as iron, steel, cobalt or nickel. The frusto-conical portions (15a, 15b) are rendered cylindrical by surrounding non-magetic sleeves (16a, 16b) of e.g. electrolytic copper or plastics such as polyester to provide a variable air gap. The core is biassed by surrounding spring (17) and has a central cylindrical portion equal in length to the core stroke. Various shaped core end portions may be used in place of the frusto-conical portions (15a, 15b).
