Abstract

Pressure welding of the ends of 2 metal rods is carried out by cutting the ends of the rods in a wedge shape, heating to a temp. 200-450 degrees C below the m. pt. of the metal, aligning the rods so that the sharp ends of the wedges cross each other, and pressing the edges together so that all the surface material of the wedges is forced out of the cross-sectional profile of the welded rods. The process is esp. useful for joining copper wire bars to produce a continuous strand for wire drawing. Lower temps. are used than in the Parent Patent, e.g. copper can be welded at 700-800 degrees C.
