Abstract

To shorten the bedding-in time of new motor brushes, and to improve commutation during that time, grooves are cut in their rubbing faces. Where these grooves intersect the edges there is danger of chipping. This is avoided if the grooves are located entirely within the face leaving the periphery intact and continuous. Such grooves can best be given a triangular cross-section with edges formed of arcs of circles. Their lengthwise direction can be parallel to the rubbing face, or in the case of square brushes, can be inclined at 45 deg. to the edges. Such grooves can also be added to the upper face of the brush. The grooves can be cut in a complete brush with appropriately shaped tools or grinding-wheels, or they may be formed during the mfr. of the brush. An example is a 5x6x12mm. brush for use on a commutator of 16 mm. dia. Grooves are made in the rubbing face of depth 0.2-0.3mm., angle of side faces 110 deg., lengthwise profile radius 20mm.
