Abstract

New functionally modified termpolymers (I) are derived from terpolymers (II) having a Mn of 10,000-200,000 (pref. 20,000-100,000) and contg. 10-80 (pref. 40-60)wt.% ethylene units, 20-90 (pref. 35-60)wt.% of units derived from a 3-18C alpha-olefin, and 0.5-10 (pref. 1-5)wt.% of units derived from a 5-12C non-conjugated diene. (I) are prepd. by metallating (II) and reacting with a lactam of formula (III)x degree. In (III) (where Z is 1-20C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl or phenyl opt. substd. by 1-10C alkyl. and n=2-11). (I) are useful as VI improves and dispersants for lubricants. They are cheaper to produce than the grafted terpolymers of US3879304.
