Abstract

The automatic control of vehicle lighting depends upon prevailing conditions. The circuitry includes a delay system to avoid unnecessary lighting alterations due to momentary changes. Control can be overridden manually and the vehicle lights cannot be left on accidentally. Light level is detected by a floating base photo-transistor attached to the windscreen feeding an operation amplifier whose output supplies three threshold detecting circuits controlling side lights, dipped lights and stand-by lights. Threshold levels are set by potentiometers, delay being achieved by feedback capacitors across the amplifiers. Rain is detected by a printed circuit resistance sensor controlling a further amplifier. Any circuit fault automatically returns control to the manual mode. Fog lights can be similarly switched in by the detectors.
