Abstract

A signalling system for blind persons allows them to cross a road in safety at a light controlled pedestrian crossing. A coil around the crossing area interacts electromagnetically with a receiver in their white cane to provide a warning signal which avoids the nuisance of an audible signal. A coil with a number of turns is placed around a pedestrian crossing and is terminated and connected to a control cabinet. Connection is made to the red light via an oscillator which provides one frequency to permit crossing and a second frequency to prevent crossing. An intermediate frequency indicates a change of state is imminent. The white cane contains a receiver with a logic circuit to control an electromechanical or electroacoustic transducer to provide the warning signal.
