Abstract

The seal consists of an endless belt or ring which is located in a compressible casing sepg. the seal from each of the joint surfaces. The casing pref. consists of a sheet of paperboard, cardboard, or similar material, with a central hole; and the edges of the holes are bent upwards and outwards to surround three sides of the sealing ring. The seal pref. consists of a mouldable sealant located inside flexible hose or tube; or is a length of interlaced metal fibres or metal threads. The sealing assembly is used esp between the baseplate and side walls of an ingot mould, e.g. for the casting of steel ingots. The casing prevents the seal sticking permanently to the mould or its baseplate, so seal residues are easy to remove prior to re-use of the mould and its baseplate.
