Abstract
Process comprises subjecting the crude creosote to a conventional single disnt. and then adding dropwise to the first distillate an aq. soln. of N boranate (NaNH4), while stirring. After a reaction time of 1-60 min., the aq. phase is sepd. and the organic phase distd. in vacuo. The most important components of creosote are cresol guaiacol, p-cresol and other phenols and phenol ethers. Creosote has antiseptic properties and is used in the prepn. of pharmaceuticals, e.g. cough mixt. Process allows the purification of beech tar crude creosote to pure creosote in only two distillation steps. as opposed to the 4 or 5 steps necessary in previous processes.
