Abstract

Impact resistant polyurethane foam is prepd. from (by. wt) 70-90 pts. polymer-polyol (I) 10-30 pts. crosslinking agent (II), 1-5 pts. H2O, sufficient prepolymer (III) to yield a 90-115% isocyanate index, and 0-2 pts. catalyst. (I) has mol. wt. 4000-8000 and consists of 2-6 pts. poly-(1-4C oxyalkylene)-triol reacted with 1 part of a vinyl-aromatic/olefinic 2-6C nitrile monomer mixt. (II) is an amine or polyol, and has functionality 2-6 and equiv.wt. 50-150. (III) is a reaction prod. of (a) an aromatic diisocyanate, esp methylene-bis-(4-phenyl-isocyanate)-diisocyanate or toluene diisocyanate, and (b) a polyol consisting of a triol having mol.wt. 100-1000 or an ether-glycol having mol.wt. 100-200. (III) contains 20-35% free. Foam is prepd. in a closed mould having compacting factor 1.5-9. It has bulk density 80-320 kg/m3, specific energy >0.172 J/cc at 50% compression/deformation index, temp. index -30-60 degrees C 2.5 and >=90% restoring torque after multiple impact. It is used in car bumpers.
