Abstract

A papermaking cloth or filter, especially an endless filter belt of the type used on a Fourdrinier machine comprises plastics yarns in both the warp and weft. The yarns, having a hydrophobic core, support a superficial polymer layer which adheres permanently to the plastic base, either in dry or wet conditions. The layer has a distinctly greater critical tension than the plastic base material. The layer may be deposited onto the bare cloth, or onto a cloth already treated with a synthetic stiffener, such as an epoxy resin. The filter is superficially modified to alter the critical tension so that water may spread over the cloth, without the yarns becoming impregnated by it.
