Abstract

The parent patent (2328796) described a process for crosslinking cellulosic fibres with HCHO in which the individual raw fibres are treated with an aerosol contg. HCHO, HCl and HCOOH, then treated with a stream of hot air and finally separated from the gaseous effluents. In this addn., a fibrous sheet formed by a wet process is claimed comprising 10-90 wt.% pulp of cellulosic fibres crosslinked as above and 90-10 wt.% of a binding additive for improving the mechanical strength and cohesion of the sheet. Besides having good hand and absorption properties the sheet is mechanically strong enough for such applications as towels and toilet paper. It can also be used for prepg. hygienic articles such as diapers and sanitary tampons.
