Abstract
The speed control for petrol engine vehicles removes the need for a mechanical linkage between the driver's accelerator pedal and the carburettor. The control also allows speeds to be preselected(16). overall control being by a microcomputer(11) receiving signals from the gearbox(13) as a function of the gear ratio selected, from a speed selector(12) and from the accelerator pedal(1). Outputs from the computer control a DC or stepping motor(10) which itself controls the setting of the carburettor butterfly valve(14). A second output provides a speed display(15). A rotary potentiometer(2) senses the pedal position directly. The pedal works against a typically 4 kgm load for a given travel. The load consists of two helical springs(4, 5) on a common axis.
