Abstract
Crosslinked thermoplastics pipe is made by extruding a tubular profile from a mixt. contg. chemical blowing agents at a temp. below the activation temp. of the blowing agents and post curing the profile by immediate passage between a twin series of travelling split mould shells passing through zones in which the temp. is first raised sufficiently to promote crosslinking and then cooled sufficiently to stabilise the profile form during subsequent hauloff. Sepn. of the extrusion process from the curing process greatly simplifies control of the extrusion process, since residence times and melt temp. are much less critical than for systems where the material can get overcured within the extruder or where physical stability must be maintained by the material emerging from the extruder. By changing the mould shells, a variety of hose sizes and shapes may be produced from the same extrusion system.
