Abstract
Process for removing foregin bodies from a continuously conveyed prod. of a divided nature is claimed. The contaminants are detected by their reflectants to luminous radiation being different from that of the prod. The mixt. of prod and contaminants is spread in a single thickness layer on an advancing, flat conveyor belt. The layer is carried under a source which emits a luminous beam directed on to the layer. Reflected radiation is picked up by a receiver which detects a change as a contaminant meets the beam. Detection produces an electric signal from the receiver to actuate a diversion trap downstream of the beam. The trap is timed to divert a zone of mixt. contg. the detected contaminant. The delay period between detection and trap operation is pref related to the linear speed of the conveyor belt and the distance between the point of detection and the trap. The luminous radiation is pref is the infrared range. Used esp for treating food prod. e.g. mechanically harvested runner beans, which needs to be cleared of stones, insects, animals, etc. Process is more reliable than operators who become visually fatigue and often do not like to handle certain foreign objects.
