Abstract

The device for detecting icing conditions in an airflow has a working surface (5) which faces towards the airflow to produce a zone in which supercooled droplets of water precipitate under icing conditions. A second working surface (6) faces in the opposite direction and produces a zone subject to natural turbulence and free from precipitation of supercooled droplets. The difference in temp. between the two zones will provide an indication of the iceing conditions. A recess (7) is provided in the first working surface to decelerate the airflow in the first zone. The detector may be incorporated in an aircraft de-iceing system.
