Abstract

New 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicarbo-(cyclo)alkoxy- or -phenoxy-1,4-dihydropyridine cpds. are of formula (I). In (I), R is linear or branched, (un)satd. 9-22C alkyl, cyclohexyl or opt. halogen-, methyl- and/or methoxy-substd. phenyl. (I) are cpds. of the same formula (in which R is linear or branched (un)satd. 1-8C alkyl) are specified for use as photostabilisers for vinyl resins, esp. PVC and vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate or vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymers. They also impact thermal stability and are esp. useful in resins used in packaging of foodstuffs. They are useful in rigid and plasticised compsns., e.g. for the mfr. of gramophone records floor tiles and plasticised packaging films. The high mol. derivs. in particular, improve the tack time of copolymer formulations, the 12-15C alkyl derivs. having a lubricating effect on vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers. They are effective in much smaller amts. than aminocrotonates or phenyl-2-indole.
