Abstract

Prodn. of masonry for high-temp. sections of coke ovens (heating piers, intermediate sections and regenerators) is carried out by mixing suitable refractory concrete with water, pouring the mixt. into a mould, subjecting the mould to vibrations to consolidate the solids into the shapes of the mould, and removing the moulded piece for subsequent baking. A suitable compsn. comprises 3-8 wt.% Portland cement, 2-8 wt.% micronised silica, 5-30 wt.% siliceous grit (0-5 mm), 20-82 wt.% flint or quartzite (0-5 mm), 5-20 wt.% finely divided flint or quartzite, 0.1-3 wt.% deflocculant, and 0.01-1 wt.% surfactant. This is mixed with 5-9.5 wt.% water. The process allows large pieces to be produced in complex shapes without the problems of heterogeneity associated with press-moulding.
