Abstract
Vertical, cylindrical, upflow settling tank has a diametral rotary bridge and a central annular sump for sludge collection. The bridge transmits rotary motion to a tank bottom rake as well as a sump scraper. The rake is rigidly coupled to the bridge which now transmits torque to the sump scraper via a torque meter. The torque meter pref. provides an electric signal proportional to transmitted torque. The torque meter is pref. fitted between two coaxial coupling flanges each fixed to one of a pair of bearing rings. This permits slight relative rotation of the bridge w.r.t. the scraper mounting, but no relative axial or angular displacement. The torque meter is pref. attached to each coupling flange with a pivotal mounting. Torque overload on the sump scraper is prevented. The torque on the sump scraper is measured independently of the torque required to turn the bridge. When the latter is measured, it is possible also to determine the torque required to operate the tank bottom rake.
