Abstract

Liquid methylene urea-based fertilizers are prepared consisting of aqueous solutions of mono-di- and trimethylene-ureas constituting an efficient source of nitrogen for plants, in which less than 25% of the total nitrogen is insoluble in the nitrogen. hot water, according to a process consisting of a first stage in which urea and formaldehyde are reacted in molar ratios of less than 1 between 80 and 105 degrees C at a pH of 4.7 to 5.2, to to form low molecular weight methylenic compounds having relatively low nitrogen contents and a second stage in which the temperature is lowered to 55-75 degrees C and the pH to 3.5-4.5, urea is added to bring the urea to formaldehyde ratio to a value of 1.4 to 3.0 and react for 30 to 90 minutes to obtain significant amounts of monomethylene diurea, dimethylene triurea and trimethylene tetraurea. The invention relates in particular to fertilizers intended to be applied directly to the leaves of crops and lawns without risk of spoilage or burns of the leaves.
