Abstract

derivs. of formula (I), nonsubstd. at 7-position, are prepd. by heating 2-isocyanate-3-phenylindene derivs. of formula (II), non-subsubstituted at 1-position, to cause ring closure. In the formulae R1 and R2 are H, F, Cl, Br, I, lower alkyl, esp. (1-4C), lower alkoxy (esp. 1-4C) or nitro. (I) have antitumour activity and are useful as intermediates for the synthesis of 6-substituted indocoisoquinoline derivs. having strong antitumour activity. A specific (I) is 10-chloro-7H-indolo(2,3-c) isoquinoline-s-(6H)one.
