Abstract

Controlled particle size TiO2 is prepd. by (a) heating aq. H2SO4 contg. is not >200 g TiO2/l until the degree of hydrolysis is 10-20% and filterable ppte. particles are formed, (b) filtering to remove TiO2 particles, giving an almost clear filtrate, (c) further hydrolysing the filtrate and adding 6-8 pts.vol. original aq. acid TiO2 soln. per pt. filtrate and (d)recovering hydrolysed ppte. which can be calcined to give TiO2 having a colour index >=1500. Pref. the acid soln. of TiO2 (a) is heated for 1-2 hr. at 90 degrees C-b.pt. and further hydrolysis (c) is by heating at 90 degrees C-b.pt. with aq. acid TiO2 soln. added over 5-8 hrs. The TiO2 is used as a pigment. It colour index of >=1500 is higher than the conventional 1250. The aq. acid-TiO2 soln. is generally obtd. by dissolving e.g. ilmenite ore in H2SO4.
