Abstract
A pipe extrusion die is fitted with a die mandrel or barrel having a reciprocating sleeve with a stepped surface to allow variation of the die volume just upstream of an outlet die of constant cross-section. Used for mfr. of pipe profiles requiring periodic variations of wall thickness, e.g. to provide extra material at intervals suitable for socket formation without loss of wall strength. The melt pump, i.e. extruder, may be run at constant speed. Reduction of the die volume causes increased flow leading to greater wall thickness, and vice versa. The sleeve motion can be controlled more abruptly and precisely than variations in the main extruder screw motions.
